1998 Fishing Journal

Tuesday, June 2nd

This was the last day of classes and the High School was a ZOO. I decided I needed a quick fishing fix. I could tell the evening was going to be close to perfect. I decided to go to Casey’s Pond. Typically I do not fish the local ponds, however, when I drove by Sunday evening there were fish up everywhere. The local ponds had been stocked with catachable Rainbows just before Memorial Day.

I Fished the far side out amongst the Lilly pads. Fish were very spooky, however, once I stood still for about 3 to 4 minutes I was able to cast to surfacing fish. Used a small dark olive emerger (#18) fished very slowly just below the surface. The strikes were like southbound fright trains. Fished for about an hour and caught about 15 to 20 fish. There were a lot of people fishing the far side of the pond and my success soon brought a few of them over. Most fish in the 10 to 12 inch range. Fish were fighting well for stockers. Water temperature was just about ideal for them at 54 degrees. Stayed until dark talking to people about fishing opportunities around the Steamboat area. One elderly couple and their grandson had been fishing power-bait and worms since noon and had not had a bit. I gave the boy two of the flies I had been using and showed him how to fish them behind a bobber. First cast the kid had a fish on in 30 seconds. Another convert to fly-fishing.
